Jayde’s Apple a Day Program

 In News

We know her voice. We’ve heard her laugh. Her personality shines through in ways no radio can handle. Jayde Donovan, formerly of “Johnny and Jayde in the Morning” on XL 106.7 in Orlando, now heard on “Hot Mornings with Jayde”  on HOT 101.5 in Tampa Bay, not only captivates her audience every morning, but she is stepping out in big ways.

Jayde appeared on LIVE with Regis and Kelly in 2010 as a guest host during their “Women of Radio” contest. She also was co-host on a new live pilot on BRAVO with Donny Deutsch, called Love Calling. Jayde was also seen in 2011 as a Correspondent for “Access Hollywood.” She competed against thousands of other talented woman for each show. We watched as the bright-eyed, soon-to-be starlet stole the spotlight and made her listeners in Central Florida proud. What you didn’t know: Jayde was already a huge star in one young teenager’s life. Her name was Brittany Hamilton.

Jayde met Brittany in 2007 at Fashion Funds the Cure, an event   benefiting the Pediatric Center Foundation—dedicated to the research to eliminate childhood cancer. Brittany had been battling bone cancer for 10 years. The two became great friends over a three-year time span. Brittany was full of life, witty and very artsy. Jayde instantly fell in love. Over the course of her chemotherapy, it was clear that comfort was not an easy thing to come by. Trying to watch television or even using a laptop were not easy tasks. Jayde wanted to do something to help bring some joy and fun to Brittany, so for her 16th birthday, Jayde bought Brittany an iPhone. Little did she know the impact that would have.

Brittany was able to reach the outside world again—to surf the web with ease from anywhere. She was able to text and talk and stay in contact with her friends and family, all in the palm of her hands. She could even sit back and listen to her favorite music (or radio station) during her chemotherapy sessions. For the brief time that Jayde and Brittany were friends, Jayde changed Brittany’s life. Brittany passed away last year, losing her battle to bone cancer. Little did Jayde know, she changed her own life, as well.

Apple A Day Program for the Give Hope Foundation

The day after Brittany’s 16th birthday, Jayde was having lunch with a friend and told her about her gift to Brittany. Her friend suggested Jayde expand the idea on a much larger scale and help other children and teens suffering with illness. That’s where an Apple A Day comes in to play.

“What a cool name!” Jayde said. “Apple A Day. I know it’s not going to cure cancer or change the world. But this small device can really improve the quality of life for someone, and it can change that child’s life.”

The Apple A Day Program for the Give Hope Foundation provides mobile devices, such as iPhones, iPads, other smartphones and even laptops to children ages 2 to 17 undergoing cancer treatment, at no cost to them or their families. How can they do that? With support from the community and people like you!

“The devices are all donations” said Jayde. “We take your old iPhone, restore it to factory settings and/or refurbish it, then give it to a child with cancer. We don’t want the families to worry about a monthly bill during difficult times, so the foundation raises money and accepts monetary donations to pay for the service. Even if your old device isn’t up to par anymore, that’s no excuse to throw it away! The Apple A Day Program will accept them, and if we can’t get them up and running again, we will sell them for parts to raise money to help pay for the service.

The best part about all of this: Brittany’s memory gets to live on. The Apple A Day Program is launched on April 22nd Brittany’s birthday. For more information on how you can donate and help Jayde with her cause, email Jayde at jayde@HOT1015TampaBay.com
